Beginner Free Motion Quilting

Class Description

Learn to free motion quilt your projects to make your quilts 100% your own creation from start to finish. Learn to free motion on manageable squares, starting with basic, easy designs and progress to intricate free motion designs, including feathers.

Supply List

• Sewing Machine in good working order with foot pedal and free motion foot; extension table if you own one*
• Basic sewing kit
• Good quality thread in a contrasting colour (Wonderfil Konfetti or Tutt 50 weight cotton thread or Wonderfil 40 weight Rayon)
• Quilting, Topstitch, or Embroidery needle, Size 14
• Tweezers to draw up bobbin thread
• Quilting Gloves
• 4 - 5 bobbins wound with the thread that you will be quilting with
• MANDATORY: Large doodle pad and pencils. This is an important tool for free motion quilting; you will use lots of doodle pads (available at The Dollar Store).
• MINIMUM 20 – 30 quilt sandwiches: Make your top fabric a plain or tonal fabric measuring 12 – 15 inches square. Your contrasting thread will show up much better on plain fabric. Your bottom fabric can be any pattern or colour. Please use a batting that is not lofty; we sell 100% cotton or 70/30 cotton/poly blend batting. Cut your batting and backing fabric 1 ½” larger on all 4 sides. 505 Basting Spray is helpful to layer quilt blocks; press with an iron to make them more secure. With your walking foot, baste ¼” around edges of your top fabric to help prevent puckering while quilting; we have a sample in the boutique of what you quilt sandwich should look like.
