Folded Star Hot Pad

Class Description

This class will instruct how to make a folded star hot pad constructed on a printed template. This technique is fun and addictive! The star is built with 4 layers of folded triangles plus batting, making it thick enough to protect a surface from a hot plate. Start sewing now, and your Christmas gift sewing will be well underway!

Supply List

• Pattern: Folded Star Hot Pad (comes with 1 Folded Star Interfacing Template; extra templates will be available for sale)
• Sewing machine with IDT or walking foot and ¼” foot; bring your manual and all your accessories just in case
• Water Soluble Glue Pen
• Stiletto or long tweezers (Purple Thang would also work!)
• Mary Ellen’s Clear Starch for Quilters
• Straight pins or Wonder Clips
• 50 wt Thread to match
• Invisible Thread
• Basic sewing kit including thread snips, seam ripper, etc
• Rotary Cutter, Mat, and 6 ½” square ruler and 6 ½” x 24 ½” rule

Fabric Required

• Find a print that you love for the top, and coordinate the bottom layers. For a clearly defined star use fabrics with high contrast. Use solid, tone-on-tone or small scale prints for Fabrics 1-3. Fabric 4 (top layer) can be a medium scale print
• Layer 1 = 4” x 21
• Layers 2, 3 and 4 = 0.15 m each
• Backing = 9” square
• Binding = Fat Quarter
• (Binding and Backing cut be cut from 1 fat quarter)
• Batting = 9” square (We carry Pellon insulated fleece if you want to protect your table! Fusible Fleece or a scrap of compact batting are also suitable.)

Cutting Instructions

• Fabric 1: Cut four 3 ½” squares for Layer 1
• Fabric 1: Cut one 2” square for below Layer 1
• Fabrics 2, 3, 4: Cut eight of each 5” squares for Layers 2, 3, and 4
• Binding: To be cut in class
• Hanging Loop: Cut one 1 ¾” x 5” strip
• Batting: Cut one 9” square Insulated Fleece or Cotton Batting
• Backing: Cut one 9” square
