Blue Calla: Coneflower Crossbody Bag
Class Description
Join us for a full day of sewing in the Embellish classroom and make the Coneflower Crossbody Bag! This is a great, medium-sized unisex bag, perfect for carrying all your essentials – even an ipad!
It has an exterior zippered pocket on one side and a main flap closure with two magnetic snaps, concealing a hidden pocket. For the bag's interior, there are two slip pockets and one zippered pocket.
The bag can be made in a variety of fabric types: fabric, cork, vinyl or waxed canvas. You can interface your bag with fusible fleece for a softer structure or with foam for a more structured look, according to your personal preference.
Though it sounds advanced, this bag is easier than you would expect and is a perfect project for confident beginners.
This special Sunday workshop will be led by the designer behind Blue Calla patterns, Celine! Get hands-on assistance from the pattern designer herself and discover all that’s possible with this versatile crossbody bag!

Exterior Fabric:
- 1/2 yard Exterior fabric 1
- 1/4 yard or less Exterior fabric, 2 yard if Vinyl or Cork.
Lining Fabric:
- 1 yard Lining fabric
Supplies & Notions
NOTE: The Interfacing, Notions, and Supplies that are required for this class may be purchased in a discounted kit; more information to follow.
Interfacing:
- 4 yards Fusible woven interfacing (20” wide)
- 8” W x 2.75” H Firm sew-in stabilizer (Pellon Peltex 70/Stiff Stuff interfacing)
- 1/2 yard Fusible fleece (45” wide)
- *** If you wish, you can substitute the fleece with foam for the body (not including the flap which requires fleece). You will need: 1 yard Foam interfacing (20” wide)
Notions and Supplies:
- (1) 1.5” Rectangle slide
- (2) 1.5” Rectangle ring
- (2) 18mm magnetic snap
- (1) 9” zipper (#3 dress zipper) for exterior pocket
- (1) 7” zipper (#3 dress zipper) for interior pocket)
Tools
You Will Need:
- Working sewing machine (bring all your feet and accessories just in case);
- Zipper foot for your machine;
- Extra needles for your machine (We recommend Microtex sharp size 14);
- Good quality polyester thread to work in your machine (Embellish carries Wonderfil Polyester and a heavier HomeDec);
- Bobbins for your machine;
- Fabric glue or double-sided tape;
- Sewing needle for hand sewing;
- Small Ruler;
- Fabric scissors;
- ‘Not so good’ scissors for cutting zipper tape
Nice to Have, but Not Necessary:
- Walking foot for your machine or IDT system;
- Small cutting mat;
- Lighter to seal zipper/webbing ends;
- Small screwdriver

Celine, the Owner and designer at Blue Calla, is a full-time pattern designer since 2013, working out of her home studio in Toronto, Ontario. She's had the opportunity to be one of the featured pattern designers for the ?Bag of the Month Club? in 2017 and 2018 and has taught workshops in the U.S. and Canada and hosted sewing retreats in Toronto. |
