Applique Made Easy: Learn The Fusible Method

This class is an introduction to the fusible applique method, suitable for beginners with basic quilting experience. 

Fusible appliqué?involves using a heat-activated paper backed adhesive (referred to as paper-backed fusible web) to attach fabric shapes onto a base fabric. This technique eliminates the need for traditional hand or machine stitching (although machine stitching can be added to define or decorate applique shapes) making it a convenient and efficient method for creating textile art. 

You will learn about the paper-backed fusible web, how to trace, fuse and cut images and then apply design to the background.  We will explore various stitches on your machine to embellish and finish applique images. 

• ‘Hello Spring’ Pattern (included with class fee) 
• Sewing Machine with accessories including manual, foot pedal, power supply, ¼” foot (bring all of your feet to find what works best for you for applique stitches ) 
• Microtex 80 or 90 Needle 
• 50 wt thread to match/coordinate with applique shapes (we sell Wonderfil Konfetti) 
• 50 wt neutral thread to piece wallhanging borders (we sell Wonderfil Konfetti) 
• Rotary cutter, 6 ½” x 24 ½” or similar ruler, small mat for personal use 
• Basic Sewing Kit (seam ripper, snips, straight pins, craft scissors, hand sewing needle etc) (our LDH craft scissors are perfect for applique!) 
• Teflon pressing sheet (if you have one; it will be demo’d in the class) 
• Pencil  

 Fabric Required:

• 14 x 18” fusible fleece (batting) 
• Background fabric cut at 14” x 18” (this will be trimmed down after the applique is complete) 
• Binding and inner border = .25 m (come to class with two strips @ 1” x WOF for inner border) 
  (binding will be cut your desired width once the project is quilted) 
• Outer border = 0.15 m (come to class with two strips @ 2” x WOF 
• Tear Easy Stabilizer = 0.30 m
• Lite Steam-a-Seam 2 (double sided paper backed fusible web) = 0.50 m
